The Health Effects of Drinking Water Contamination

The causes of tap water contamination are many and varied ranging from agricultural runoff to improper use of household chemicals and everything in between. Few of us realize the extent or impact of these low level synthetic chemicals in the water we use. While the standard use in our society of over 80‚000 different synthetic chemicals has offered added convenience and productivity in our lives‚ it has also come at a tremendous price... drastic increases in degenerative disease.  In other words…Poor Health.

In the early 1900s‚ before chlorine‚ pesticides‚ herbicides and the tens of thousands of other chemicals that we are exposed to every day‚ the average American had a 1 in 50 chance of getting cancer‚ today 1 in 3 can expect to get cancer in their lifetime‚ 1 in every 2 males.

Our use of man-made chemicals has become so extreme that we can now find traces of these low level SOCs (synthetic organic chemicals) in virtually every public water supply around the world. A report by the Ralph Nader Study Group confirmed that "U.S. drinking water contains more than 2100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer."

We've learned that any chemical we use in our society, will eventually wind up in our water supplies. There is no "new" water! Our planet re-uses the same water over and over. And as our use of SOCs increases, so does the toxicity of our water. Earth's natural filtration process is not effective at removing these toxic SOCs... nor is municipal water treatment. Industry, agriculture and individuals... all contribute to the problem. Many of the contaminants found in water can be traced back to improper or excessive use of ordinary compounds like lawn chemicals‚ gasoline, dry cleaning solvents and cleaning products.

Once we realize that everything that goes down the drain‚ on our lawns‚ on our agricultural fields or into the environment by any means... eventually winds up in the water we drink‚ we begin to see just how vulnerable our water supplies really are.

Our municipal water treatment facilities do not remove SOCs. For the most part‚ today‘s water treatment facilities are much the same as they were at the turn of the century, filter out the visible particles and add bleach!

"Drinking water plants are old and out of date‚ and water supplies are increasingly threatened by and contaminated by chemicals and microorganisms." Natural Resources Defense Council.

One of America‘s leading authorities on water contamination‚ Dr. David Ozonoff of the Boston University Of Public Health states‚ "the risk of disease associated with public drinking water has passed from the theoretical to the real."

Many illnesses that in the past could not be linked to a probable cause have now been linked to toxins in our drinking water. "While levels of these carcinogens (SOCs) in drinking water are low, it is precisely these low levels that carcenogenists belive to be responsible for the majority of human cancers in the U.S."
U.S. Council On Environmental Quality

The use of pesticides and herbicides has become so excessive that they are now commonly found in household tap water and bottled water with alarming frequency. A Dec 2005 by the Environmental Working Group found that Tap water in 42 states are contaminated with 260 contaminants in water served to the public. One hundred forty-one (141) of these detected chemicals — more than half — are unregulated.

EWG's analysis of tap water tests from 42 states shows that 195,257,000 people in communities have been served drinking water contaminated with one or more pollutants at levels above health-based limits, and in 4,950 communities four or more contaminants exceeded health-based limits between 1998 and 2003.

The tragic health effects of consuming these highly toxic chemicals are magnified many times over for small children because their systems are more sensitive and still developing. Small children also consume a much larger volume of fluids per pound of body weight and therefore get a bigger dose‚ yet none of these factors are considered when the EPA‘s maximum contaminant levels are set. The National Academy of Sciences issued a report in 1993 on this subject and stated "children are not little adults" and their bodies are less developed and simply incapable of detoxifying certain harmful compounds."

Another major flaw in the estimated risks of chemicals in our drinking water is the false assumption that only that one chemical is being consumed. The regulations are set based on what is assumed safe for a 175 pound adult drinking water with only one chemical present and does not take into account the combined toxicity of two or more chemicals.

Trying To Lose Weight‚ Want Healthier Looking Skin?

An increased intake of pure‚ healthy water will enhance nutrient absorption‚ weight loss‚ skin hydration‚ detoxification and virtually every aspect of better health. Natural, healthy weight loss can only occur by increasing our intake of pure, healthy water. Water is not only the number one ingredient for a healthy body on the inside‚ but it also plays the lead role in maintaining a healthy and youthful appearance on the outside.

The quantity and the quality of the water we consume determines our body‘s ability to metabolize and shed excess fat and properly maintain the body‘s largest organ‚ our skin. Water is also the key ingredient in keeping our skin moist‚ subtle and resilient. The best way to moisturize is from the inside. Drinking more water will result in softer‚ healthier‚ younger looking skin. Try it‚ drink an extra glass of water in the morning‚ one before lunch and one an hour before bedtime... you‘ll be amazed at the results!!!

All weight loss programs are based on a reduced caloric intake and an increased rate of metabolism‚ both of which are "naturally" achieved with an increased intake of clean‚ healthy water. Weight loss is primarily the result of our liver converting stored fat into usable energy. This process not only requires sufficient water intake‚ but also can be greatly accelerated by consuming an abundance of clean‚ healthy water. Water also suppresses the appetite naturally and helps digest our food properly. When we increase our water intake it naturally speeds up our metabolism and allows our body to better assimilate nutrients from the foods and nutritional supplements we consume‚ the result being natural and healthy weight loss.

When we do not consume enough water the upper and lower intestine have a reduced ability to absorb nutrients. The result is that most of the value of our foods and supplements are lost and pass through our body with out absorption.  Sugars and carbohydrates are absorbed and processed faster than other nutrients‚ so without an abundant intake of clean water, we can end up getting all the calories without the nutrition. Food cravings are primarily the result of nutrient deficiencies; it's our body's way of telling us we need something. If our food is not properly digested, nutrient absorption is not sufficient, then the body keeps telling us we need something in the form of food cravings.

"60% of all Americans are over weight‚ it‘s our #1 health problem." - The Surgeon General

A good indication of how much water is enough is by noticing how much color is in your urine. Any color at all in the urine usually indicates a water deficiency... resulting in reduced nutrient absorption and a slower metabolic rate.

The quality of the water we drink also greatly impacts our body‘s ability to achieve or maintain a certain weight. One of the main functions of the liver is to act as a filter and eliminate toxins from our body. The liver performs this vital process using water in a joint effort with our kidneys. If the water we consume contains chemicals like chlorine‚ lead or agricultural and industrial pollutants‚ then much of our liver‘s capacity is spent on filtering contaminants instead of processing fat into energy. Many recent studies have even shown a link between consuming chlorinated water and thyroid dysfunction, leading to weight gain.

Truly‚ water is the key ingredient for healthier skin and natural weight loss.

The Cornerstone of Good Health Is Good Water

The human body is a water machine‚ designed primarily to run on water and minerals. Every life giving and healing process that happens inside our body... happens with water. In just the last decade medical science has begun to focus more on the tremendous healing ability our body has and how much that ability depends on water. Our body instinctively knows how and strives to sustain youthful longevity‚ and in its every effort... water is the key. The quantity and quality of the water we drink has a dramatic impact on our health.

The human body is made up of over 70% water. Our blood is more than 80%‚ our brain ... over 75%‚ and the human liver is amazing 96% water!

The function of every cell in our body is controlled by electrical signals sent through our nervous system from the brain. Our nerves‚ in reality‚ are an elaborate system of tiny waterways. If the fluid inside our nerves thickens due to dehydration‚ or is contaminated with synthetic chemicals or toxic heavy metals like lead‚ the vital signals can get distorted. Many experts now believe that the distortion of these signals may be the root cause of many degenerative diseases and neurological illnesses like Attention Deficit Disorder‚ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome‚ anxiety‚ depression and even Alzheimer‘s disease.

The quality of the water we drink is equally as important as the amount. If water already contains chlorine and other chemicals‚ it has less of an ability to carry toxins out of our body. If we consume water that contains traces of synthetic chemicals‚ then we force our liver and kidneys to be the filter... ultimately damaging or destroying two of our most vital organs. With an abundant intake of clean‚ healthy water we allow our body to perform all the healing processes that it is naturally capable of.

Considering the major role that water plays in the function of our brain and nervous system‚ its purity is possibly the most basic and essential key to healthy longevity. Proper digestion and nutrient absorption depend on a healthy intake of water.  In order for our body to get the nutritional value from our foods and supplements‚ we must consume plenty of good water. Since sugars and carbohydrates are absorbed more rapidly‚ even a slight degree of dehydration can cause us to get the caloric intake without the nutrition from the foods we eat.

Our energy level is greatly affected by the amount of water we drink. It has been medically proven that just a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25% to 30% loss of energy in the average person... a 15% drop in body fluids causes’ death! Water is what our liver uses to metabolize fat into useable energy. It is estimated that over 80% of our population suffers energy loss due to minor dehydration. An increased intake of healthy water will help metabolize and shed stored fat... resulting in more energy and less fat.

Detoxification is probably the single most important component to long-term health... the key to disease prevention.  Water is our body‘s only means of flushing out toxins. In our industrialized‚ chemical society‚ we are exposed to literally hundreds of harmful substances daily. Our air‚ our foods and everything we touch... contain traces of harmful chemicals. Unfortunately we can‘t keep toxins from getting into our body‚ but we can help our body to get rid of them by drinking plenty of healthy water. The more water we drink... the more we allow our body to purify itself.  Nearly all-degenerative disease is the result of toxins building up in our body.

Lead in Drinking Water

Lead in drinking water is the #1 environmental health threat to children in the U.S. -- U.S. EPA

Next to chlorine‚ lead is the most common contaminant found in tap water. Lead in drinking water usually originates between the water main in the street and the household faucet‚ so treatment from a central point is not logical or practical. Most lead in drinking water comes from lead lined pipes‚ lead solder and brass plumbing fixtures inside your home. All chrome-plated brass and brass plumbing fixtures contain 8% to 15% lead. Essentially‚ every household with indoor plumbing has some level of lead in the plumbing structure that may represent a health risk. The EPA estimates that 98% of all homes have pipes‚ fixtures or solder joints in the household plumbing that can leach some level of lead into the tap water.

It has been determined and recognized by the EPA that there is no safe level for lead in drinking water and that any level poses some degree of adverse health effects‚ especially to small children.  Even very low levels of lead can cause reduced IQs‚ learning disabilities and behavioral problems such as hypertension and reduced attention span in children, often these effects are life long and irreversible.

One study‚ done in Baltimore MD‚ showed that children with high blood-lead levels had a significantly higher rate of problem behaviors than children with low blood levels and concluded that "this study lends support to the belief that undue exposure to lead in childhood years may have a pervasive influence on the prevalence of juvenile delinquency in this country."

In adults‚ lead in drinking water causes high blood pressure and reduces hemoglobin production necessary for oxygen transport and it interferes with normal cellular calcium metabolism. Water borne lead affects every one in a very tragic and permanent way. Lead exposure is cumulative and long lasting. This toxic metal is stored by the body‚ primarily in teeth and bones.

Essentially‚ lead has a very damaging effect on the body‘s electrical system‚ the nervous system. It causes the critical life giving messages‚ sent from the brain to every cell and organ in our body‚ to become distorted. This results in the onset of a chain of adverse health effects.

It is estimated by the U.S. EPA that lead in drinking water contributes to 480‚000 cases of learning disorders in children and 560‚000 cases of hypertension in adults‚ each year in the U.S. alone.

In 1993 the EPA released a first-time report that showed the results of the new "test at the tap" requirements for lead in drinking water. The report documented that in America‚ 42 states exceeded the legal limits of lead in drinking water and that other states failed to do the required testing. Some areas had lead levels in excess of 450 parts per billion‚ thirty times the legal limit of 15 ppb. The level the EPA has set as the safe level‚ or MCLG (maximum contaminant level goal) is -0- ppb.

The biggest tragedy of lead contamination from drinking water is that it is completely preventable. By taking a few simple steps‚ beginning with Point-Of-Use filtration of our drinking water like the filters from CleanRevitalizedWater‚ you can virtually eliminate the crippling effects of lead on our society‚ and our children.

HEALTH COLON = HEATHY BODY

Your parents always told you to brush your teeth everyday, wash your hands before dinner and after using the bathroom, take a bath or shower, basically they where telling you to keep your outside clean.  What they forgot to teach you is that keeping clean inside is just as important.  In fact a growing number of health practitioners are encouraging their clients to look at herbal supplements, diets high in fiber rich foods, and colon cleansing for a healthy body.

Cleansing is a simple concept.  For nutrients we consume to be absorbed and used properly the colon needs to be thoroughly cleansed and toxins regularly removed.  A colon cleanse can help to remove the toxic material and allow the intestines and colon to perform at its peak.

Anything stopping the body from absorbing the nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, amino acids, ect) will impact your bodies systems and can lead to:

  • Occasional Constipation
  • Bloating and Gas
  • PMS
  • Fatigue and Moodiness
  • Weight Gain
  • And more

Bowl movements are not part of the conversations around the water cooler or even among family members.  So those who experience less frequent eliminations many times are too afraid to talk about the problem with their health care provider.  In fact up to $725 million is spent on OTC laxatives yearly to correct the troubles.

Most of us eat three meals a day.  Then you eat it causes the large intestine to begin contractions to move your previous meals through the colon for elimination.  Your food should only be in your system 12 – 24 hrs.  So after breakfast your body should naturally begin to move yesterdays breakfast out of your body.  Being ‘Regular’ is having bowel movements each day, not just the once a day or even every other day like many people suffer with.

One key to good colon health is a diet consisting of raw whole foods. Food like fruits and vegetables, nut and whole grains are naturally high in fiber and enzymes to help the digestion process.  The fiber adds bulk to our diet which helps food and waste move through our digestive system.  The average person only consumes 13 or fewer grams of fiber daily while the Recommended Daily Intake is up to 38 grams per day.  It is easy to see why we spend so much money on OTC products to help us out.

A second key to good colon health is good clean water.  Water is absorbed by the fiber and keeps our bowels hydrated.  This is important because dehydration can lead to occasional constipation or to even more serious problems.  Adequate water intake helps to keep the flow of materials through the colon, helps to dilute and remove toxins, and helps you to feel fuller.
